The Importance Of Friday and Jummah prayer

Friday is the sixth day in Islamic week. The literal meaning of Friday is congregation. In Islam, this day is given the most importance than any other days of the week.

Friday is a very important day for Muslims. It is the day that Muslims gather together to pray in congregation. Directly before the prayer they listen to a lecture designed to empower them with valuable knowledge about God, and the religion of Islam. From the traditions of Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, we learn that “The best day in the sight of God is Friday, the day of congregation” Congregational prayers (obligatory for men) are one of the most strongly emphasized duties in Islam.  It is a time when Muslims come together to worship One God, and  find strength and comfort by standing shoulder to shoulder and reaffirming their faith and devotion to Him.

Jummah holds a special place in the hearts of every Muslim to refresh their faith.

“O you who believe! When the call to prayer is proclaimed on Friday hasten earnestly to the remembrance of God, and leave aside business. That is best for you if you but knew.”

(Quran 62:9)

Jummah Khutbah:

Khutbah (Sermon) serves as the primary formal occasion for public preaching in the Islamic tradition. Khutbah is also an integral part of Jummah prayer and it is important to listen it with attention and also tries to implement in their respective lives. Sermon is a short lecture regarding the principle of Islam jurisprudence & history of Prophet Muhammad’s life & his attitude towards certain situations.

The Significance of Friday & Jummah Prayer

The day of Jummah has many religious significances and virtues associated with it. Jummah prayer is obligatory for every man except the sick, child, slave and woman. On the day of Jummah Muslims gathered I mosque in order to offer Friday prayer.

The day of Jumu’ah includes an hour during which all supplications are accepted. Importance of Jummah is stated in one of hadith of our beloved

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH):

“There is an hour on Friday and if a Muslim gets it while offering Salat and asks something from Allah Almighty, then Allah will definitely fulfill his demands and Prophet Muhammad (SAW) pointed out the shortness of that particular time with his hands.”

 (Bukhari)

  • Best day of the week:

The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ), said:

The best day the sun rises over is Friday; on it Allah created Adam. On it, he was made to enter paradise, on it he was expelled from it, and the Last Hour will take place on no other day than Friday.

[Ahmad and At-At-Tirmithi].

In the Jummah prayer, the Khutbah is before the prayer and the more early a person goes for prayer, the greater the chances of him listening more of the remembrance of Allah Almighty. In this regard, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said in a hadith:

“On the day of Jummah, the angels stand at the entrance of the Masjid in which Jummah Salat is to be offered. They write down the name of the person who enters the Masjid first, and thereafter the name of the person who follows, and they continuing doing this. The person who entered first will receive the reward of sacrificing a cow, thereafter a chicken, thereafter the reward of giving an egg as charity in the path of Allah. Once the khutba commences, the angels close the register and begin listening to the Khutbah.”

 (Muslim)

  • Listening To Khutba With Attention:

Khutba is the integral component of the Jummah prayers. It is Khutbah that differentiates the prayer of Friday from Zuhr prayer offered under normal circumstances and in ordinary days. Khutbah is the remembrance of Allah and one should listen to the Khutbah sermon with undivided attention. Prophet (PBUH) said:

“If you (even) ask your companion to be quiet on Friday while the Imam is delivering the sermon, you have in fact talked irrelevance (i.e. engaged in idle talk). (Muslim)

From the hadith it is clear that when the Imam starts the Khutbah one must leave everything and listen to the Khutbah attentively.

  • Sins are expiated on the day of Jummah.

Holy Prophet (SAW) said in hadith: “Whoever takes a bath on a Friday and does it well, and purifies himself and does it well, and puts on his best clothes, and puts on whatever Allah decrees for him of the perfume of his family, then comes to the mosque and does not engage in idle talk or separate (pushing between) two people; he will be forgiven for (his sins) between that day and the previous Friday.”(

Ibn Majah)

Holy Prophet (SAW) said:

“On Friday, send Durood abundantly to me, as it is presented before me.” (Abu Dawud).

  • Reciting Surah Kahf on Friday:

Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

Whoever reads Soorat al-Kahf on the day of Jumu’ah, a light will shine for him from beneath his feet to the clouds of the sky, which will shine for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will be forgiven (his sins) between the two Fridays.’”

{Suratul Kahf Makkan Surah – 18th Surah in the Qur’an – It’s ayat number 110}

  • Following are some of the essential things to do on Friday:

Taking bath and purify oneself completely by observing Ghusl (grand ablution). Narrated by Abdullah bin Umar (R.A) said:

“I heard the Messenger of Allah, pbuh say: ‘When one of you wants to come to Jumu’ah, let him perform Ghusl.” (Muslim)

Wearing clean clothes, doing miswaak (brushing teeth) and applying itr (non alcoholic scent). Abu Sa`id (R.A) described Prophet (PBUH) saying as:

“I testify that Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said: “The taking of bath on Friday is compulsory for every Muslim who has attained the age of puberty; and also cleaning of teeth with Siwak and using perfume, if available.”

(Bukhari)

Sending lots of blessings on Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) in the form of Durood.

“Recite Durood upon me in abundance on the day of Jummah since they are presented to me.” (Ibn Majah)

Walking towards the mosque, as it results in attainment of blessings on one step and forgiveness of sins on another. Abu Hurrairah (R.A) described Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) speaking as:

“He who purifies (performs Wudu’) himself in his house and then walks to one of the houses of Allah (mosque) for performing an obligatory Salat, one step of his will wipe out his sins and another step will elevate his rank (in Jannah).”

(Muslim)

Friday is the most blessed day of all. The prayer of Jummah is the jewel in the crown of this day.

Muslim must make special preparations on Friday for the prayer. And try to spend it the way Allah Almighty mentioned in the Holy Quran. And also we should try to perfect our Friday prayers according to Sunnah ways of Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
