La ilaha illallah – لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ | Virtues & Importance

La ilaha illallah – لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ

Among all the ways to remember and worship Allah ﷻ, some words carry a weight that far exceeds anything in this world. One such phrase is “La ilaha illallah” — a declaration so powerful that it forms the very foundation of faith.

Hadith 1

It was narrated from Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that

The Messenger of Allah ﷺsaid: “Musa (peace be upon him) said:

‘O Lord, teach me something by which I may remember You and call upon You.’ He said: ‘Say: La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah).’He said: ‘O Lord, all Your slaves say that.’ He said: ‘Say: La ilaha illallah.’  He said: ‘There is no god but You, my Lord, but I wanted something that is only for me.’

He said: ‘O Moosa, if the seven heavens and all their inhabitants others except Me, and the seven earths, were (placed) in one pan (of the Balance) and La ilaha illallah was placed in the other pan, La ilaha illallah would outweigh them.”

(Narrated by Ibn Hibban, 6218)

The phrase “La ilaha illa Allah” (There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah) is not just a statement — it is the foundation of Islam. It embodies:

  • Absolute Tawheed (Oneness of Allah),

  • Sincerity in worship,

  • Rejection of all false gods,

  • and total submission to the Creator.

In another Hadith

The Messenger of Allah ﷺsaid said:

“Faith has seventy-odd – or sixty-odd – branches, the best of which is saying La ilaha ill-Allah ,
and the least of which is removing something harmful from the road, and modesty is a branch of faith.”

(Sahih Muslim 35b)

In a world full of distractions, returning again and again to “La ilaha illallah” anchors the heart. It strengthens our faith, refreshes our spirit, and reminds us of our ultimate purpose — to worship Allah alone.

Make it part of your:

  • Morning and evening adhkar (remembrances),

  • Dhikr after prayers,

  • Spontaneous moments when your heart longs for closeness to Allah.

Because no other words you can say, no other action you can perform, will ever be heavier, purer, or more beloved to Allah than these words:

“لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ”
“There is no god but Allah.”

Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying,
“The best way to celebrate the remembrance of Allah is to say:

La ilaha illallah (there is no true god except Allah).”

[Riyad as-Salihin 1437].

It grants Paradise:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

It is narrated on the authority of ‘Uthman that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said.

He who died knowing (fully well) that there is no god but Allah entered Paradise.

(Sahih Muslim 26)

May Allah keep our hearts firm upon Tawheed and grant us the ability to remember Him often and sincerely. Ameen.
